DW Vid: Marble House [Vividcon Premiere '09]

Song: Marble House
Artist: The Knife
Spoilers: Human Nature/Family of Blood, brief flashes from Series 1-4
Size: 49.4 MB, avi
Download: here
Streaming: embedded

Summary: "There's one thing I always wanted to ask Jack. Back in the old days. I wanted to know about that Doctor of his. The man who appears out of nowhere and saves the world; except sometimes he doesn't. All those times in history where there was no sign of him... I wanted to know why not." — Gwen Cooper, Torchwood: Children of Earth

Notes: About a year before Gwen uttered these words, the idea for this vid was born. Eerily enough I also wanted to know "why not," and so turned to the episodes that really shed some light on the Doctor, the episodes he's hardly in at all. And now I've been trying to come up with a way of condensing what this vid means to me into one paragraph and as you can see I have failed. So I'm just not going to say anything at all, at least not now. (My vidder commentary has all the gory details.) You guys have at it.

~ Must take a moment to prostrate self before ponderous77 who manages to multitask as my soundboard, my hand to hold, and the whip at my back whenever I vid Doctor Who. She was impeccable during the developmental stages of this vid and I should probably think about dedicating my first born to her or something.
~ To ohvienna I express my undying love.

~ Marble House was selected for In-Depth Review at Vividcon this year and I just want to thank milly once again for the INCREDIBLE presentation. Some notes from the discussion have been posted here and in more detail here. There's also some interesting meta in this post.

MARBLE HOUSE

I cut your nails and comb your hair
I carry you down the stairs
I wanted to see right through from the other side
I wanted to walk a trail with no end in sight

The moment we believe that we have never met
Another kind of love it's easy to forget
When we are all alone then we do both agree
We have a thing in common this was meant to be

You close my eyes and soothe my ears
You heal my wounds and dry my tears
On the inside of this marble house I grow
And the seeds I sow will grow up prisoners too

The moment we believe that we have never met
Another kind of love it's easy to forget
When we are all alone then we do both agree
We have a thing in common this was meant to be

Now where's your shoulder
What is it's name
What's your scent
Say it again
If it goes faster can you still follow me
It must be safe when it's on TV

I raise my hands to heaven of curiosity
I don't know what to ask for
What has it got for me?
The others say we're hiding
It's as forward as can be
Some things I do for money
Some things I do for free

Interesting summary! It's different from the blurb in the program book, and forgive me on my forgetfulness on when CoE aired. Did you finish and submit this vid before or after CoE?

Anyway, this vid JUST BLOWS MY MIND. It's definitely a highlight of the con for me. So many things to love about this vid from the use of text to to the use of external source footage. Just one example of a moment that really sticks out is the paralleling of the WWI footage of soldiers marching with the boys marching at the school. The speed ramping thingie you did there to go with the music was an inspired touch.

I did kinda LOL a bit when some people were commenting during the in-depth vid review on the different uses of text in this vs. Signed, the Doctor, probably not realizing both vids were yours. I say the way you used text here worked for me visually. The way it fills the screen along with the space-y clips gives it a much grander scale than the more intimate usage in your other vid.

I seriously need to watch this vid many, many more times. I ♥ it that much.

Oh hai! I am now answering comments. :P

Yup I was a bit torn to lose the summary from VVC, but I'll discuss The Watchmen when I do my commentary. To answer your question, CoE aired way after the deadline for Premieres. This Gwen quote was actually in a trailer for it and when I first heard it I was literally stunned. I was like, "Gwen?! Have you seen my vid, or what?!" :P

As far as in-depth, well that was an experience all right. I ADORED Milly's presentation, but I guess I was surprised that we never moved beyond the text. Well I mean we did, but just as we were approaching the core of the vid my time was up. Ah well. Also yeah, LOL to the folks who thought Signed, the Doctor was someone else's vid. It was the font! Such an un-HWG font. :P

I'm thrilled this was a highlight of the con for you! It's one of those vids that just come together and edit themselves. THANK YOU MUCH FOR BEING THERE AND COMMENTING HERE AND OMG I WANT THE NEXT VIVIDCON ALREADY!

My favorite part is 4:46 when you rewrite Family of Blood's ending and make Tim Latimer explode! Just throwing that out there, because I know you wanted me to. :-)

Thank you! I am honored to know I helped you in even the smallest way to make this, but this vid is all yours, yo. Be proud, it is super-mega-foxy-awesome-hot.

Oh Milly. I honestly can't thank you enough for being so AWESOME to me before and during VVC. You really made it all more amazing an experience and you know how much I ADORED your presentation. Seriously, it was fantastic. And you looked super foxy up there with that microphone. *wolf whistles* ILU, MAN!!!!!!

Okay, wow. WOW.

Seriously, the introduction is just about the most beautiful thing I've ever seen, it's such a perfect summation of the grandeur and wonder of Doctor Who. And then of course you go and rip its heart out.

I love your musicality, as ever, there are so many cuts in this that I love - my favourite, I think, is at 3:37 from the Doctor to Martha, that's just chilling.

That last section, the Doctor walking away just when the Earth needs him most - it is so brutal, so much bigger than all the angst entailed in the show itself. Why doesn't he save us from ourselves? You're right, it's exactly Gwen's question. I really hope you do feel like doing a commentary at some point, because I pretty much want to roll around in everything this vid is showing.

In short, incredible, quite probably my new favourite of yours, which is saying something! YOU FTW.

Wow. That was simply amazing, and a really moving way to look at it. You incorporated all the astronomy stock and trench footage really well and... I have nothing else meaningful to say. Just wow.

Thank you, dear! For me those eps are the strongest of the series to date, so it was a pleasure to really dig deep. And they lend themselves to that deepness perfectly. Yay Paul Cornell! :)

That was absolutely magnificent. It really captured the essence of the show and the dilemma that the Doctor faces - that he can't be the "hero" all the time. He needs to look after the whole universe - and sometimes, even at the times the Earth could really use his help, he has to turn away...
cortexiphan juice box: [dw] the boney king of nowherehollywoodgrrl on August 26th, 2009 04:01 am (UTC)
Thank you so much for watching! And, yup. The hero always makes the tough choices. But then again, Doctor is not always the hero, which is the real kicker in all of this. From his Time Lordy youth he's been the coward who runs away. ;)

...I need to rewatch this vid. A LOT. Because it's *so* grand, and *so* brutal, and *so honest* about the life the Doctor leads that's, yes, *glorious*--but also truly, truly awful in terms of how *above* things he can be, and what that can mean for the people who are actually *involved*.

Your use of Martha, John Smith, Timothy and Joan as people whose lives Ten impacts--and the *way* he impacts them--is excellent.

So, yes. Rewatch time now. NOW. *g*

Oh WOW, I love all the Who scenery shots of space and different worlds. Who has come a long way from bubblewrap monsters and can be so PRETTY at times! It's a nice set-up for "Well, why should the Doctor spend all his time on Earth when there is so much more stuff out there to see?! Look at all these worlds!" And then it's followed immediately by old footage of gruesome human wars and the argument is invalid because "Look at this suffering! He has a time machine! Why doesn't he stop it?"

I love the contrast of the Doctor staring to Martha watching the sky around 1:35.

Random: pretty pretty Jessica Hynes!!

Oh, I love Martha offering the sonic screwdriver to the Doctor, asking him to choose that side of himself and his horrified expression. John Smith doesn't have that epic responsibility that the Doctor must carry and he must have been tempted to just ignore it.

Whee, pretty DW villian->incarnations->companions montage when Tim opens the locket, you did a great job with editing the clips to the beats!

Random2: Creepy Harry Lloyd! (But still pretty cheekbones?!)

And then Martha offers that Time Lord part of him again, this time with the watch and his response? Is to shoot at people. Great clip choice! Especially when followed by his emo-tear face.

Oh, wow, this next mini Martha-as-HBIC portion is just SO KICKASS. Gosh, I adore her. SO MUCH.

This is so neat that now that the Doctor has embraced his alien nature, his first act is TO LEAVE EARTH TO IT'S DESTRUCTION. I really like the repetition of the war footage interspersed with clips of those young, scared BOYS firing their guns. BEAUTIFUL.

I can't wait to read the discussion notes now.

First of all, big huge THANK YOU for your lovely comment. :D

All the external footage was mixed with DW footage in both the WWI stuff and the space section. I'm glad it blended seamlessly, especially the space stuff, but it wasn't all from Who, no. ;)

Random2: Creepy Harry Lloyd! (But still pretty cheekbones?!)
He is the greatest random DW guest star ever! Srsly, no one has committed to a role quite like he had, lol! ♥

MARTHA!!! ♥ ♥ ♥

Thank you again! I'm a bit giddy that everyone had some thinkies from this vid. :D

What a brilliant piece of art, HWG! It has everything I love in a music video. Brilliant editing, fantastic use of a song, and a MESSAGE. I love when there's a deep purpose to the vid, and isn't always just pretty fluff (although that's fun too. lol). GORGEOUS JOB!
