Merlin Vid: Life in a Glass House

Song: Life in a Glass House
Artist: Radiohead
Spoilers: Series 1
Size: 48.9MB, avi

Summary: Morgana surrenders to destiny.

Notes: What I love so dearly about this show is that we all know what's going to eventually happen. We know the future and we watch these characters move along on their respective paths. In some ways we find ourselves in the same situation as Morgana, who is terrorized by the dramatic irony that she can't quite decipher. She remains impotent against her own inevitable destruction. And for this reason I find her tragedy the most powerful. While Merlin is encouraged to perform magic (albeit in secret), Morgana is dosed with medicine and lied to. She is all alone when it comes to her gifts, yet she feels the magic all around her just as Merlin does. And while Merlin remains the light for Arthur, Morgana will ultimately step into darkness. She's already got blood on her hands. It's wonderfully ominous like that.

Once again, I'm in trouble with my only friend
She is papering the window panes
She is putting on a smile
Living in a glass house

Once again, packed like frozen food and battery hens
Think of all the starving millions
Don't talk politics and don't throw stones
Your royal highnesses

Well of course I'd like to sit around and chat
Well of course I'd like to stay and chew the fat
Well of course I'd like to sit around and chat
But someone's listening in.

Once again, we are hungry for a lynching
That's a strange mistake to make
You should turn the other cheek
Living in a glass house

Well of course I'd like to sit around and chat
Well of course I'd like to stay and chew the fat
Well of course I'd like to sit around and chat
But someone's listening in.

What a beautiful exploration of who Morgana is and where she stands. Such a good choice of music too. Such a powerful vid - lovely work.

BB you came to the Merlin party! :D Actually I think this is a show you should watch. It has a lot of great pairings and potential. Lots of pretty. Lots. ;)

I'm really tickled by your review. You really didn't need to go into such detail but it's so cute! I'm glad you did. "Blonde dude" lololol. ILU! :DDD

Oh and I can't believe you haven't heard this song! It comes off the Amnesiac album, same album as "I Might Be Wrong." (There's like 3 good songs on that album and these are two of them, lol.)

Merlin has been a blessing for me with DW being stagnant until Series 5 begins.

Oh heavens, I've been hoping you would make a Merlin video, but the fact that you did a Morgana character study just makes me exponentially happier :) I really love what you said, about her being the most tragic character, and also differences between Morgana and Merlin, which you explored beautifully through the imagery of your vid. Gah. I seriously think I clapped at the end, which some would say makes me look incredibly silly, but I'd say it's a testament to your awesome skills :) This one's definitely staying on my desktop and finding a place on my iPod as well.

Fabulous editing. I like how you took some relatively unusual music and crafted the video clips to fit it perfectly. The parallels between Morgana and Merlin are well drawn and the tragedy of Morgana's fate comes through. Excellent color correction, too, very vibrant and very even. Really gorgeous and thought-provoking.

When you said you were vidding Life in a Glass House I was secretly o_O because I'd always thought of this song as completely unviddable; I'm so glad that you proved me wrong. :D

This is a fascinating, challenging vid, both in terms of what it says and how it says it. I'm particularly in love with the opening - it takes that gleeful fandom moment that we all know (OMG new Merlin episode squee!) and transforms it into something completely different. Out of all the Merlin vids I've seen, this one is the most un-Merlin-like, and I certainly don't mean it in a negative way. You've always walked the edge of innovation in terms of taking a source and drawing so much more out of it than what we've been given in source, and this is a fantastic example of that.

The parallels/differences between Morgana and Merlin are gorgeously clear, as is the path drawn before her by Nimueh to a certain extent, and how everyone in the glass house forces her onto this path. The extended ending from ~3:00 onward is just spine-tingling, gorgeous vid work. I LOVE the motion of everything here, added or source.

Beautiful, audacious work. *hugs*

So...so...does this mean you liked??? *jumps around* :DDD

I really wanted to throw a vid into the SRS BSNS MERLIN VIDS pile, so I'm extremely giddy about you calling it un-Merlin-like. *punches air* Me likey. :D And I'm literally glowing right now from your remarkable comment. It's very flattering and I'm incredibly relieved to know that my crazy take on things doesn't go over the audience's head too much, lol. As you well know, it's always fun to take a nice bite out of the source to get to the good stuff. Om nom nom. ;)

Thank you m'dear!!!

OMG thank you! What a delightful comment. :D I have this thing about vidding where I hate using a consecutive series of clips from the show. So with everything I try to cut around the original episode's edits. I think that adds to the effect of giving the subject a new meaning, etc. I'm just really pleased some of that caught your eye.

And yes. MORGANA!!! She makes me sigh.

oh & just btw, i love that you seem to love radiohead so much!
I realized when I did the year-end vidding meme thingo that my love of vidding Radiohead is becoming some sort of embarrassing obsession or something, lol. But their music is SO POWERFUL sometimes that it just deserves to be vidded.

Oooh, lovely! I think you've nailed it, in both your vid and your explanation--ITA, she is such a tragic character, and it makes her all the more fascinating, knowing that she's going to fall someday. The editing was fantastic--my only complaint was that I wanted even more Morgana in it! :p

Someone just recently linked me to one of your vids in this comm, and it was so awesome that I went and watched every single one that I could still download. As a result of that venture, I have come to the conclusion that your vids are ALL COMPLETELY AWESOME.

And I completely and totally agree with your note on Merlin. That is exactly why I find this show so very awesome. And the way you formed this vid and expanded on that was both beautiful and fabulous!

I really enjoyed this. I liked how you showed how Morgana's position is different from Merlin's, because she is the king's ward. As well as different from Arthur's because of societal expectations at the time. I also liked how Camelot was referred to as a glass house, because Camelot in the end was only temporary, especially for Morgana.

Riveting, as always. I never would have chosen this music for any Merlin vid, which is really what fascinates me about it, so much. It's a discordant, disorienting piece and you did a good job visually selling your idea for the vid. One of my favorite shots was of Uther wiping his mouth-- so prim and proper and impassive in contrast to the chaos of what Morgana's going through. Nice work! I was so excited to see you'd done a Merlin vid! :-)
cortexiphan juice box: [mrln] good night sweet princehollywoodgrrl on January 13th, 2009 08:35 pm (UTC)
Oh man, thanks! I find it so interesting how a couple people have said that the music is so un-Merlin-like, but to me it just called out as this sort of Middle Ages theme if you will. I'm glad that in the end it all came together for you. Merlin is currently an epic obsession of mine so hopefully there shall be even more vidding! Eeeps!

Wow, this is truly one of the most original and superbly crafted videos I've ever seen in any fandom. You're first cut from eye to eye was inspired, as was your use of the pan and zoom. It was edgy in style and quite emotionally disturbing - I'm left feeling quite ill at ease - but then I'm sure that is the point. The song was an excellent choice too.

I couldn't agree more with your take on Morgana. The legend paints her as a tragic figure, her downfall wrought by forces outside of her control, but some versions paint her as just plain evil. I prefer to believe the former and it seems that this latest BBC version would agree with that.

one of the reasons I'm drawn to the show and to this fandom is because of that element of fate - their paths are predestined, and knowing how it ends just makes the journey to get there all the more delicious and painful.

Morgana is inherently a good person, however your point about the difference between her magic and Merlin's is an excellent one - what happens when magic is left without guidance? You've explored that so well in this vid and I can't wait to see what canon offers us.

Have downloaded the full version of the vid and will be watching many time.
cortexiphan juice box: [mrln] tis now the very witching timehollywoodgrrl on January 13th, 2009 10:09 pm (UTC)
Thank you so much for that wonderful comment! It's incredibly exciting to explore the full future potential of Morgana because we've already seen such immense growth of this character in canon. The steps she took in just this first series of the show...well greater things are still to come. ;)

what happens when magic is left without guidance?
Ah yes. This. I can't help but feel so sorry for her Morgana. Not to be grotesque or anything but her magical discovery is like a girl discovering menstruation without any previous knowledge of it. How frightening it must must be! Oh the drama, lol.

Anyway I can ramble about this all day. Thanks for watching and keeping and commenting! :)

Will this show ever deserve the vids that are being made of it?
This is beautiful. I love the motion, the way there's a constant sort of whiplash (like at 00:57 or 01:17) that matches in realtime (well, cut time) the slow/fast zooms the show itself does for things like Merlin's eye or Arthur's fights. From the first shot, with the transition from Merlin's eye to Morgana's, you illustrate Merlin's freedom to speed forward and take action, while Morgana is constrained by her ties to her house. Trying to speed forward is for Morgana like trying to run through molasses (I defend this figure of speech on the grounds that I'm from Boston), so instead each time she has to respond to the impulse to move by freezing and watching on in horror. It's odd that I never noticed before how similar Merlin and Morgana's "determined" expressions are. What Merlin doesn't understand about Morgana is how he is lucky in that he can do something. Morgana wants to act out against Uther, but she doesn't dare and moreover mustn't, because she'll shatter everything -- herself, Arthur's future...

Firstly, Love the song, which means that it's harder to find vids I like because I know the song so well. Not so here - I love how well it fits. I love the contrasts between Morgana and Merlin - eyes to eyes, certainty to fear. Also, te way the other characters work, Arthur, Gwen's father. Don't talk politics, don't throw stones. It's a gorgeous video, carefully made and fitting together amazingly.
